Dr. Rita E. Niyigena is one of the experienced optometrists at Eye Doctors of Washington. She offers primary care to our patients, helping them find the best vision solutions for their lifestyle. Dr. Niyigena provides fittings for soft, toric, and multifocal contact lenses and also specializes in pre- and post-operative care for refractive surgery. She is committed to educating our patients about their eye health and helping them see the world more clearly.
Dr. Niyigena is originally from Rwanda, Africa and migrated to the United States as a teenager. She attended Grand Valley State University where she completed a Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Science. Dr. Niyigena then obtained her Doctor of Optometry degree from Arizona College of Optometry. While in optometry school, she participated in charitable events, such as the Special Olympics, the Diabetes Walk, and the Phoenix Lung walk.
In addition to being part of the EDOW team, Dr. Niyigena remains active in the eye care community as a member of the American Optometric Association and the District of Columbia Optometric Society. She is also actively pursuing a fellowship with the American Academy of Optometry.
Her passion for eye health has inspired Dr. Niyigena to connect with the public through Twitter, offering daily tips and advice about how they can preserve their vision. She also enjoys spending her time exercising, reading, playing sports, and traveling. Dr. Niyigena is fluent in both French and English.
